The present study was conducted to investigate caregivers’ attitudes toward disclosing medical bad news to relatives and to identify the reasons that families conceal the truth. Based on a literature review, we hypothesized that the caregiver’s concern about patient despair would be the main reasons that families conceal the truth, and the concern would be related to the patient’s depressive symptoms. We interviewed patient-family dyads in a palliative care setting using validated scales to collect comprehensive socio-demographic, psychological, and clinical data.
